About Us

The SweetJoy Company is a family owned business that specializes in handmade soy wax candles that are phthalate free and contain no harmful toxins or chemicals. The company is a tribute to the woman who started it all Joyce Melhiser. Starting in 1982 at the request of her daughter she made her first wedding cake and a business was born. For the next 30 years Cakes by Joyce Inc. was regionally sought after by soon to be brides wanting to create a unique, one of a kind cake for their special day. Over the years Joyce honed her craft by becoming internationally trained under some of the top cake decorators in England and Canada. She brought a new European look to her creations and even won a live orchid show with her sugar orchids. She won the equivalent of the gold medal of cake decorating by winning best of show at the prestigious Wilton Cake Show in Chicago as well as winning best of show at the Kentucky State Fair four times and best of show at the Indiana State Fair the only time she entered. Known as the cake lady and Indiana Joyce, it wasn’t just her cake decorating skills that were so sought after, but it was the taste of her buttercream icing that always stole the show. Borrowed from her grandmother, Joyce would use this icing to rave reviews and quickly became the go to cake decorator in the region, averaging 80-90 wedding cakes per with no employees from her home based cake studio.
After Joyce passed away in 2019, her son and daughter in law wanted to honor her spirit by creating something unique and special like her, so The SweetJoy Company was born and named after Sweet Joyce Melhiser. Joyce loved flowers, butterflies and beautiful smells, and to that end The SweetJoy Company has created a line of handmade candles that will fill any room of the house or office with wonderful fragrant scents, with none of the toxins and chemicals of the leading store bought candles.
The video below featured the story of Joyce and her wedding cakes and aired on a local news program in 1997, we are pleased to make it available for you to get to know the woman that inspired the creation of The SweetJoy Company, LLC.
